Nokia was reportedly blackmailed out of millions of euros by criminals who had threatened to reveal stolen source code six years ago, according to Finnish TV station MTV.
The news was confirmed by Reuters, who asked police if they were investigating a case of blackmail, which is still open.
Detective Chief inspector Tero Haapala told Reuters: “We are investigating felony blackmail, with Nokia the injured party”.
According to the TV station, criminals hacked into Nokia and the stole source code of its Symbian software, the OS that previously ran Nokia smartphones.
The hackers had demanded a ransom for return of the source code and threatened to release the code if Nokia didn’t comply.
