Microsoft evangelists would argue that the firm has had a healthy attitude towards openness and interoperability for years. There are innumerable examples of compatibility initiatives littered across the company’s track record; the trouble is, these efforts have often stemmed from a desire to enable open connections to (rather than from) Microsoft products. As far back as 2006 Microsoft was trying to snuggle up with the likes of Novell with interoperability agreements that have rarely been staged without widespread criticism.
