While I was thinking about how I felt about Facebook’s now-controversial experiment (short version: Facebook did nothing wrong, but was kind of icky; the big issue is transparency, not informed consent) I emailed Misha Angrist to get his thoughts. Angrist, for those of you who don’t know, is one of the first people to have his genome sequenced. And he wrote a book, Here Is A Human Being, about the experience. I’ve heard him hold court passionately about how the current system of informed consent can actually block people from participating in research they want to be a part of, and I figured he’d be thoughtful here.
